Research indicates that reading every day with your child can help strengthen the relationship between child and parent, as well as create a love of learning that helps children succeed later in school. Peabody Public Library offers this program to children at least 18 months old until they start kindergarten. Contact the Children's Department to find out how you can enroll your preschooler in the 1000 Book Club.
This program is designed to motivate children in K - 2nd grade to build their reading skills. As children learn to read, the world around them opens to new vocabulary, interests, and possiblilities. The goal of this program is for the student to read to an adult or by themselves. Any Early Readers books can be read for the program. Each book that the student reads is recorded in a reading log, and completed reading logs are turned in for rewards. We hope this program will foster independent reading as well as a lifelong love of reading.
This program is designed to encourage children from 3rd - 8th grade to increase their reading skills and introduce them to different genres of books. The list of over 150 books is a combination of fiction, historical fiction, classics, non-fiction and popular titles (click here to open the list in PDF format). When students have read 10 books, they can turn in evaluations and receive a book of their choice to keep from our collection of new paperback books. We hope this program will instill a lifelong love of books!
Every year the Peabody Public Library participates in the PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest for kids in Kindergarten through third grades and also holds a PPL Writers Contest for kids in fourth and fifth grades. Rules and entry forms are now available for our 2016 contest, so get your information and start writing! All books must be submitted by closing time on Monday, March 14th.
You can pick up copy of the 2016 rules and entry forms at the library, or download them in PDF format here.
